Verifies your identity and ensures security

The ID must include your photo, full name, and signature. It must be valid and not expired.

Confirms your current residential address

Documents must show your name and address. They need to be recent, usually within the last 30 or 60 days. Digital copies must be clear and legible.

Social Security Number

Required for tax reporting and identity verification

Helps the bank confirm your identity and track financial activities. Make sure it matches your official documents.

Personal Identification

A government-issued ID such as a driver’s license or passport is required. Identification is important for security and verification purposes. Additional forms of ID might be accepted, such as a state ID or military ID. Expired IDs or those not matching your current address may cause issues.

Proof of Address

Acceptable items include utility bills, lease agreements, or mortgage statements. Verifying your residence is essential. Proof of address must be recent, typically within the last 30 or 60 days. If you don't have traditional proof of address, use a letter from a government agency or a bank statement.

Social Security Number

The credit union needs your social security number for tax reporting and identity verification. Alternatives such as an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) may be used if you don't have a social security number. Security measures are in place to protect your social security number.

Why We Need This Information

Federal regulations require credit unions and banks to collect specific information when opening new accounts. The USA PATRIOT Act of 2001 established these rules to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing.

These requirements aim to protect both financial institutions and their members. At Radiant Credit Union, we take your privacy seriously and carefully handle all collected information. Our security measures ensure your personal data remains safe while we comply with federal regulations.

7 Steps to Open a Checking Account

1. Check Membership Eligibility

Credit unions require prospective members to meet certain requirements to be able to join. For example, Radiant Credit Union extends eligibility to a wide range of people, including anyone who:

  • Lives, works, worships, attends school, or regularly conducts business in certain rural Florida districts
  • Is an immediate family member of a current member
  • Incorporated and unincorporated organizations located in or maintaining a facility in these rural districts are also eligible to join.

2. Gather Required Documents

Collect your personal identification, proof of address, and Social Security number. Ensure all documents are current, legible, and meet the required criteria.

3. Apply Online or at a Branch

You can start your application by visiting a Radiant Credit Union branch or applying online. You’ll need digital copies of your documents if you want to apply online. Radiant will provide a secure way to upload them to our server if you apply online.

4. Begin with a Share Savings Account

At Radiant Credit Union (and at most all credit unions) your new membership begins with a Share Savings account. This account acts as your ownership share in the credit union. It signifies your stake as an owner and typically comes with the benefit of higher savings rates compared to most banks. This step is crucial as it establishes your membership and eligibility for other accounts and services.

5. Select Your Checking Account

Take a few to explore our checking accounts to determine which best fits your needs and lifestyle.

Radiant Credit Union offers several highly attractive checking accounts:

6. Complete the Application

Fill out the application form with your personal details and submit the required documents. If you apply in a branch, one of the Radiant Team Members will be there to assist and answer any questions you may have. If you apply online, you can call us if you need help or want to speak with someone.

7. Fund Your Account

Make an initial deposit to fund your new checking and savings accounts. The required amount will depend on the specific accounts you selected.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Checking Account

There are several important considerations when selecting a checking account. These factors can impact your overall banking experience. Not sure about joining a bank or a credit union? Check out the differences here.

Interest Rates

Interest rates affect your savings and checking accounts. It is important to compare rates between different financial institutions – most have easy-to-access charts that show all of their interest rates for their savings and checking accounts, as well as loan products.

Debit Card Benefits

A debit card offers ease of access to funds and convenience. Radiant Credit Union provides benefits like our Nickel Back Rewards, which gives you a nickel in your account for each debit transaction on your account. Debit cards come with security features such as EMV chips and fraud protection. Online banking allows you to manage and monitor your debit card transactions.

Membership Benefits

Being a member of Radiant Credit Union offers additional benefits. These include lower fees, better rates, and discounts on loans or financial education resources. Credit unions are community-focused, and members often have a say in the organization’s decisions.

Good customer service is crucial when choosing a financial institution. Radiant Credit Union supports its members, including 24/7 customer service or dedicated account managers. There are different ways to contact customer service, such as by phone, email, or in-person visits. Radiant Credit Union has received stellar customer satisfaction ratings and awards.
