Tax-Free! 7 Surprising Back-to-School Buys in Florida

Most Florida residents (especially parents) have heard of our state's tax-free holiday for back-to-school shopping. You might hear "back-to-school" and think of pencils, backpacks, and notebooks, but you might not realize just how broad that definition can be.

First, let's go over some basic rules:

  • Personal computers or their related accessories must be $1500 or less per item.
  • Clothing items priced $100 or less per item, excluding jewelry, watches, umbrellas, skates, and fins.
  • School supplies $50 or less per item.
  • Learning aids and puzzles $30 or less per item.

There are many forms of transportation to school and it is very important to be safe and look both ways. Many kids ride their bike to school and so a helmet upgrade can definitely be a back-to-school item.

For a limited time you can get any style or size bike helmet under $100 with no extra taxes, including skateboard and scooter helmets for added protection.

3. Laptops

Of course, so much of our learning happens on a laptop, but you might not see it as a "school supply" that you can get tax-free. Good news – you can get any laptop brand (or accessories!) during tax free weekend.

The only requirement is that it is under $1500, plus you could save even more with our Nickel Back or Dime Back programs on Debit and Credit Cards!

4. Swimwear

Since they're considered clothing, you can get swimsuits, trunks, or caps tax free as well! Starting in August you can go to any store, purchase any style or size swim wear, and checkout all with no taxes, as long as it is under $100.

Since Florida summers extend into the school year, its a great time to stock up before they're out of season completely.

5. Purses, Slings, and Wallets

Backpacks might be expected during Back-to-School season, but did you know you can treat yourself to a new purse or laptop bag to make you work commute easier?

Obviously some restrictions apply and you can't buy designer labels with tax free savings, but you can still find great deals under $100 to fit your needs and styles.

6. Wi-Fi Routers

Maybe your children have a lot of digital homework, or are enrolled in online classes. You can purchase certain routers under $1500 to install or expand your home internet services.

However, the actual service is not included and not tax exempt, just the machine itself.

7. Digital Notepads and Readers

Following the $1500 technology rules from before, you can purchase a new tablet tax free for a limited time. This includes notepads, e-book readers, or even just regular tablets that can be used in a classroom setting, like this Kindle Fire HD.

There are so many more items that you can get tax free during this sale. Almost anything you may need for Back-to-School season can be found in-store or online for purchase, but to double check the restrictions click here.

Remember to shop early or shop online only to avoid missing out on these savings, a lot of stores become empty the closer to start of school you get. Additionally, you can save more with our Nickel Back and Dime Back programs linked to any Debit or Credit Card purchase, any time of the year!
